Expansion of Highway 183 has Begun

April 1, 2024

Construction has begun toward expanding lanes on a 10-mile stretch of Airport Freeway, also known as Highway 183, from Loop 820, in Fort Worth, through Bedford and into Euless, according to Tommy Williamson, the public relations manager for North Tarrant Infrastructure.

Williamson, addressed Bedford’s City Council on March 12 with an update on the project. He stated the expansion had already begun with a partial demolition of the bridge at Holiday Lane, in North Richland Hills, and expected the completion of the overall project in early 2027.

“Many people,” Williamson continued, “are moving to North Texas,” which has boosted the daily traffic count through Bedford to about 250,000 vehicles, which is why this project is coming “eight years ahead of schedule.” One new Express (toll) lane in each direction will be added, he said, for a total of three eastbound Express lanes and three westbound Express lanes through Bedford, from Bedford Euless Road to Industrial Boulevard. Since the Express lanes are in the center of the highway, he explained, the disruption to the general (non-toll) traffic will be minimal.

North Tarrant Infrastructure, a joint venture between Ferrovial Construction and Webber, has partnered with developer North Tarrant Express Mobility Partners for the Highway 183 expansion. These companies were the original builders of the 183 and Loop 820 corridor expansions, between 2010 and 2014, which nearly doubled the traffic capacity, according to North Texas Express’ website, texpresslanes.com.

Some of the upcoming work will be partial bridge demolitions at Bedford Road, Forest Ridge and Central Drive, Williamson listed. He stressed that “not everything over Forest Lane is coming down.” It will be just enough to make room for the new Express lanes, which may require road closures for “a couple of nights.”

For the Loop 820 segment of the project, Williamson said, one general highway lane will be added in each direction, from Boulevard 26 to Riverside Drive.
The $414 million expansion, he emphasized, is funded entirely through “toll revenue” and “no TXDOT (Texas Department of Transportation) money or public funds involved.” Although, he added, they are coordinating closely with TXDOT. As originally designed, he said, they are able to work within the current space without having to enlarge the right of way.
