April 3    With the new year underway, Bedford’s residents will be voting in about a month for Places 3 and 5 on the City Council. From remaining on the development track with the recently approved Comprehensive Plan to proposing a civil liberties task force, there are four candidates running — two for Place 3 and two running to fill Place 5. March 18    “Neglected” and generally obscured from view, three veterans’ memorial plaques have been sitting on the front lawn at City Hall for more than 50 years.  However, in an effort spearheaded by Council Member and Navy Veteran Rich Steves, Bedford is planning to relocate the plaques with the construction of a more appropriate Veterans’ Memorial at Harris Ryals Park.

March 6    An estimated 1,200 HEB ISD students were bused to the Pat May Center, in Bedford, late Wednesday morning as a result of a bomb threat at the District’s Alternative Education Program campus, KEYS Learning Center and Central Junior High School, according to a FOX 4 News report.

February 28    After years of on-and-off development proposals for Bedford Commons, the City may have found a viable option with Midway Development’s multi-phase, mixed-use pitch.  An impressed City Council has requested Midway and the city manager to move forward to the next step of planning.  The Bedford Journal Project followed the Council meeting and details Midway’s proposal for the 31-acre site.

January 30     With Bedford’s Beats and Eats Festival approaching its third year, Mayor Dan Cogan expressed an interest at Tuesday’s City Council meeting in expanding the event starting next year, in 2026. “This is our signature event,” he stated, and suggested that “we should have the goal of growing it more.” He added that “to do that means allocating a little bit more for entertainment that’s going to “bring in a bigger crowd.”

January 17    A “conceptual design” with two options for the reconstruction and beautification of the eastern segment of Bedford Road, between Woodson Drive and Industrial Boulevard, were presented to City Council Tuesday night.  The designs, based on standards approved last year as part of the City’s new Comprehensive Plan, were created by Westwood Professional Services, which was contracted for $98,000 by the City last month for the design concept.

January 15    Now that the holiday season is over and City Council is back in session, it is time to start thinking again about elections. Saturday, May 3, was unanimously (7-0) approved by City Council as the date for Bedford’s 2025 election for Council Places 3 and 5.
