Stolen Vehicle and Police Standoff Lead to Suspect’s Death

July 10, 2024

At approximately 2:00 Wednesday afternoon, Bedford Police received notification that a stolen vehicle’s license plate was picked up by flock cameras, as reported by a City of Bedford’s News Flash press release.  Officers located the vehicle and driver, who was in a local business.  Officers attempted to make contact with the subject, stated the News Flash, who immediately fled from the scene carrying a firearm.

According to thesecuredad.com, flock cameras read license plates and store the data for law enforcement, schools, businesses and homeowner associations.

The subject stopped in the 2200 block of Central Drive at L. Don Dodson, the News Flash said, where he conveyed suicidal thoughts to officers.  For several hours, officers attempted to deescalate the situation and persuade the subject to put the firearm down.  Unfortunately, negotiations were unsuccessful and officers used non-lethal methods to subdue the subject.  During that process, according to the News Flash, the subject tried to escape, when officers perceived the subject threatened them and a Hurst member of the Northeast Tarrant County SWAT team shot the suspect.  The subject, the News Flash said, passed away on the way to the hospital.

Bedford Police note that this is an active investigation. The incident is being reviewed by the Bedford Police Criminal Investigations Division, in conjunction with the Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office.  The Hurst officer has been placed on administrative leave.
