For the second in the past few weeks, the area around the “2800 block of Brasher Lane has tested positive for West Nile Virus,” as reported in a City of Bedford News Flash. This area is generally located east of Highway 121 and just south of Harwood. The first time was on June 26. The statement stated that the City was notified by Tarrant County Public Health on Wednesday, July 17, of the positive sample.
“In accordance with the City’s Mosquito Abatement policies and recommendations from Tarrant County Public Health”, the City’s statement said, “creeks and flumes within a quarter-mile radius of the trap will be treated with larvicide on Thursday morning, July 18.”
When it comes to protecting yourself and others from mosquitoes, the City recommends to remain indoors during dusk and dawn, when “mosquitoes are most active.” It recommends to wear long sleeves and pants outside and to spray a thin coating of repellent on your clothing. “DEET, according to the News Flash, “is an effective EPA-registered active ingredient to look for in your insect repellent. Always wear repellent when outdoors and choose products that contain up to 20 percent DEET.”
The News Flash statement also recommends to drain standing water in and around your yard from “old tires, flowerpots and clogged rain gutters”, which are “considered mosquito-breeding sites.”
