Brown Trail has Reopened, but there is More Work to Come
Wednesday, February 26, 2025
Brown Trail has reopened to traffic after a year of water and sewer line work. However, there is more work coming to Brown Trail, as well as to Bedford Road.
Brown Trail, north of Pipeline and south of Bedford Road, reopened to traffic last Thursday after the City completed a year of “water and sewer line upgrades,” as announced in a Bedford News Flash.
The next phase, which will involve repaving of that section, will begin in early 2026. The next work phase will include raised medians at intersections, according to City of Bedford Communications Director Molly Fox. The medians, she said, will only be at intersections to better allow residents access to their driveways along the roadway. The plan also calls for signal improvements at intersections.
The reconstruction of Brown Trail will involve “a resurfacing and some aesthetic improvements and safety improvements,” said Joe Schweitzer, an engineer for the City as he presented the project at City Council’s October 22 meeting of last year.
A total of $3.7 million has been budgeted for the design and reconstruction of this project. Half of the funding for the project, as stated by the October 22 meeting agenda, is coming from the City’s $22 million capital projects bond issue that Council approved in May of last year. The other half, up to the $3.7 million budget cap, the agenda explained, will come in the form of a reimbursement from the Tarrant County 2021 Transportation Bond Program (TBP). The TBP, in total, was a $400 million bond issue approved by Tarrant County voters in November of 2021.
In the meantime, according to last Thursday’s News Flash, work crews will start “water and sewer line improvements” along the half-mile section of Bedford Road between Brown Trail and Norwood Drive. The work, the statement said, will close the two westbound lanes, but leave open the two eastbound lanes for two-way traffic. The Bedford Road project, the News Flash stated, is planned to continue through early July.
The City is also considering reconstructing the eastern section of Bedford Road, between Woodson Drive and Industrial Boulevard, if grant funding can be secured. The safety and beautification project, as presented to City Council last December, would reduce traffic to one lane each way in order to widen the sidewalk as an extension to Bedford’s walking and bike trail network.

There are two designs based on standards approved last year as part of the City’s new Comprehensive Plan that were created by Westwood Professional Services, which was contracted for $98,000 by the City last month for the design concept.
The grant funding, if approved, is expected to fund 80% of the construction cost.
