As a result of unexpected “obstacles” Wednesday, March 27th, scheduled installations of new waterline taps and valves left some Bedford residents without water for 16 hours, according to a News Flash on the City of Bedford’s website.
The area effected included Lexington Place, Charleston Drive and Gettysburg Place, as well as new waterline valves on Charleston Drive and Natchez Avenue/Savannah Way, the News Flash stated. The area is generally north of Pipeline Road and west of Central Drive.
The News Flash said the installations were delayed “due to the condition of the existing infrastructure.” The News Flash further detailed that “many valves had not been touched in decades and had to be worked to function properly. Another valve was broken in the open position and an alternative valve had to be located to complete the isolation. Several valve stems were bent and/or off-center due to resurfacing of streets and shifting soil over the years.”
The News Flash also said “unidentified pipes” and “abandoned water lines” required “investigation” and, in some cases, “removal.” In addition, the News Flash explained that “mechanical fittings” needed to be installed correctly in order to “recharge the system.”
Further delays were caused, the News Flash stated, by three incidents of “residents entering the restricted work zone.”
