HCI Commercial Awarded Contract to Renovate New Senior Center
June 12, 2024
City Council on Tuesday awarded HCI Commercial the contract, out of nine bids, to renovate the old Airport YMCA building for conversion into the new Senior Center. In a unanimous (7-0) vote, the Council approved $3.28 million for the overall project, with $2.71 million (83%) designated for HCI. The remainder of the funds are planned to be applied toward an architect, furniture, fixtures and equipment.
As reported by the Bedford Journal Project, the funds for the new Senior Center are part of a $22 million bond package unanimously approved by the Council on May 28th, which includes a new Central Fire Station, remodeling of the other two fire stations and other capital projects. The $1.93 million difference for the project, according to the meeting agenda and Bedford Communications Director Molly Fox, will come from the $17 million 2023A bond, also for capital projects, approved by Council August 8th of 2023.
According to the City’s website, the new Senior Center, located on the southeast corner of Central and Cummings, will include “various multi-purpose rooms, a lounge, fitness area, commercial kitchen, game room, craft/ceramics room, library nook, reception area, several offices for staff and restrooms.”
In addition, Project Manager Gary Johnson, addressing the Council, said the building will be redone in new colors, will get a new roof and two new air conditioning units.
Johnson said the City purchased the old YMCA in 2022 for $935,000 and after an inspection, according to the meeting agenda, it was determined the building would need “repairs and an extensive renovation.” The agenda said that, at that time, the City hired Williams Tharp Architects “to provide suitable construction documents and other professional services to assure all health, safety and building codes will be met during the renovation process.”
Since demolishing the old building to make way for the Boys Ranch makeover, the Senior Center has been temporarily located at the Old Bedford School while the YMCA moved to its new permanent location at Generations Park at Boys Ranch. The City’s website estimated the renovation of the new Senior Center is expected to be completed by the end of 2024.
